Tips On Being A Gentleman

What really does it mean to be a gentleman? Of course, it has evolved from the old meaning which was just for members of the gentry. However, some of the things that defined them are still a part of what defines a gentleman. It is a way of life and not something you turn on and off like a switch. Being a refined man rotates around a single word: regard. It's regard for yourself and those around you. Imbibe the following simple tips to enhance your personal and professional life.

1) Create your own fashion identity:

The word "gentleman" usually evokes images of a man wearing a suit and a tie. This is a throwback to the old days. But, the word now has more definition. It is not just a specific manner of dressing but a cultured manner accompanied by a well put-together ensemble.

A combination of dresses that can be uniquely yours but still not be trashy. For instance, a look at the Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka would show he has a preference for shirts, a waistcoat, and sandals. It is his unique style and is combined with being cultured.

2) Watch your language:

No matter how good you look, or how well dressed you are, it is all a waste if you do not watch what you say and how you say things.

Swearing is a huge no-no in both your professional and personal life. Even when you are angry or distressed, there are better ways of communicating this without having to swear.

So, work on your diction and cut out the swearing.

3) Be hygienic:

Apart from dressing good, dress clean. Your body and what clothes you wear must be clean at all times. This staves off body odor and also makes you eye-catching. The scruffy look has its place but you should endeavor to remain well groomed.

4) Be deliberate and decisive:

Not making a decision is a decision in itself, and it's not a good one! If you desire to be respected, you must be seen to know what you want. Making decisions on what you want and don’t, is very important. It lets people where you stand on particular issues. Know how to say "no” and stick to it.

Don't be that over-commit, under deliver kind of

5) Be a man of your word:

A gentleman always respects other people's time but most importantly means what he says. If you say you are going to meet someone, don't be late. If you have said that you would help someone, keep your promise. These small things matter. They engender trust, respect and, in some cases, love.

6) Be polite and humble:

Raising your voice doesn’t sound manly, it sounds rude. It does not even mean your point is better or would be accepted. Be polite to everyone irrespective of their gender, age, and status. Do not let your ego rule your life or relationship with people. Remain polite and see how this would endear you to those around you.

Respect is a two-way street that is built on humility and being polite.

7) Hold the door:

This is a very old practice but also a subtle way of showing good manners. Holding the door open for people is a gentleman’s calling card.

8) Be and do you:

In this tech-driven world, it has become easy to create separate personas of yourself online. But the best bet is to remain true to yourself all the time.

Being yourself is what makes you unique; it is why you are you and no one else can be you better than you. The flaws you find irritating might be what someone else or others find endearing and, for them, sets you apart from everyone else.

Being at ease with yourself is the true sign of a gentleman. They don't lie or mislead. They try to make everyone comfortable around them. Always remember that being a gentleman never goes out of style.
